Modern Calligraphy for Beginners

In this Summer-themed 4 week workshop, you will learn essential calligraphy techniques using an oblique dip pen and ink (straight pen holders are also available for left-handed attendees).

We will begin the course by practicing the basic calligraphy strokes, progressing to the alphabet and connecting letters. Following this, you will have the time to develop words and cultivate your unique style along with learning about composition, flourishing, and all about the best materials to use and where to buy them from. Black Sumi ink will be used for the main writing activities but there will also be a variety of different inks provided for you to try out in class.

During the course you will get to create greeting cards, gift tags & calligraphy art.

This course is aimed at beginners and anyone who has tried modern calligraphy before, but would like a refresher course.

Materials provided: You’ll also get a personalised gift bag for your worksheets, pen holder and nib, ink, as well as items you’ve made along with a few little extra luxury stationery items. All equipment is provided along with an apron.

What to wear: Please wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting some ink on.

About the tutor: Your tutor, Charlie Allen, is an artist and calligrapher who started her own luxury stationery business called Sleepy Bee Studio in Cambridge in 2019. After previously working in the buying industry, she wanted to create her own brand to incorporate calligraphy and art into stationery designs.
