Collaborative community project unveiled!

Working alongside The Friend’s of Sheep’s Green and students at Newnham Croft Primary School, Rowan has been involved in an exciting community project to create a new welcome sign for Sheep’s Green Learner Pool. Some of you may have already seen this in the making in a previous blog post. On Monday 29^th July everyone came together to unveil the sign in the sunshine!

Friends of Sheep’s Green Chair, Dani Redhead, has led the project along with a number of other supporters and was there to unveil the sign. She said, ‘It has been a fantastic, truly collaborative project. The students from Rowan and Newnham Croft Primary worked so well together, doing a comprehensive wildlife survey of Sheep’s Green, then developing their ideas on paper and making models in clay before realising their ideas in wood. At each stage there was a great working relationship between the children and Rowan and the project couldn’t have gone better! The sculpture is testament to a superb project’.

Russell Cuthbert, woodwork tutor and artist at Rowan, said ‘This project was all about working collaboratively as a team including Rowan staff, volunteers and student artists. Working on all the individual carvings, the insect hotel, getting it installed and all the other hard work behind the scenes. The sculpture is made predominantly from oak, but it also includes walnut, maple, cherry, bamboo and lime from Wandlebury. It was great to see everyone coming together to unveil the sign on Monday and with those last finishing touches coming soon it will stand in place for many years to come.’
