No ordinary sign…

Before Christmas we started a new and exciting project to create an entry sign and noticeboard for Sheep’s Green Learner Pool in Cambridge.

This community project, working alongside The Friends of Sheep’s Green and students at Newnham Croft Primary School, focuses on the observations of wildlife from the area and the history of the site. Fun fact: Charles Darwin and Leonard Jenyns,  an important 19th century naturalist, are linked to the site through their interest in beetles in the Cambridgeshire area which has also been incorporated into the design.

Russell Cuthbert, Wood Tutor at Rowan, filled us in on the work in progess: ‘This is not any ordinary sign! It has a few special features to benefit the local wildlife. We have an insect hotel which is part of the main wording, a bird bath, an internal crevice for bats as well as a slate section where the local community can keep track of the wildlife they have seen. The design is inspired by drawings from the school students at Newnham Croft Primary which includes a whole array of insects and creatures. We are now working hard to bring the design to life with many different pieces from a heron, to beetles, fish and much more.’
