Rowan creates a lasting memory

The woodwork team at Rowan, tutors and student artists together, have created a new welcome sign for Milton Country Park and it is now in situ just a year after the project was commissioned.

The sign was commissioned by Peter Garside and is dedicated to the memory of his wife Pauline who passed away in 2016. Rowan was very honoured to be offered the commission. Pauline and Peter were regular visitors to Milton Country Park for twenty plus years and after Pauline required a wheelchair they were able to continue visiting the park safely with her mobility scooter. In her last three years Pauline developed Alzheimer’s which motivated Peter to see what support was available and to share his findings. Ashley, student artist, and Francis, student volunteer, both worked on the sign and had the opportunity to meet Peter. Francis: “I liked working with oak wood and that many students were able to get involved in making the sign on different days. This is one of the larger commissions completed at Rowan and it has been great fun to work on. I really like that it is going to be in a public place where everyone can see it.”
