Learning Disability Week 2023

Learning Disability Week 2023 is here! This year the theme is MYTHBUSTING and showing the world the incredible things that people with a learning disability can achieve. Meet our artists below who do this each day when they attend our forest school and arts centre. Setting an amazing example to others that they can achieve anything!

Meet Ashley

Rowan Ranger Ash, who was born with Downs Syndrome, travels independently from the Cambridge city centre to forest school every Friday. “Forest school is great. I got to celebrate my birthday with everyone here. There were games and a quiz at lunchtime and doughnuts. I leave the house at 8.41 and go to the bus stop. I pay for my ticket and travel from Cambridge to Histon. I then walk by myself to forest school and see Russell and Lorraine and help set up the forest school. I feel cool that I do it (go on the bus) by myself.” Keep being awesome Ash!

Meet Lucy

Meet artist Lucy. Lucy is non-verbal and loves being able to express herself through through music and art. She enjoys singing, learning new songs in makaton with the group, and exploring new techniques in the print workshop. When asked to describe music at Rowan she signed fun! A wonderful role model for others. Keep shining bright Lucy.

Meet Matt

Matt comes to Rowan two days a week, spending his time between the woodwork and ceramics studios. Matt enjoys coming to Rowan to make artwork, make friends and he enjoys "Helping people, because it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t do that.’ He also supported the start up of our now weekly games club. Where students come together to play different games and challenge each other in Uno, bowling and much more! "Feels happy and able to get my ideas out into the open." says Matt. Keep leading from the front Matt.
